This was not the moon last night but about a month ago. Derek took this amazing pic with his new camera that we got for the Costa Rica trip. Once I catch up on post starting in about March/April, you might even get to see more pictures taken with it on the trip! Imagine that!
It is early Saturday morning and I am up wide awake. yay! Of course it helps that
A) I went to bed at 9 at the same time as the kids and
B) I had a caffeine headache and took one excedrin at 2 am after feeding laney.
I am looking forward to a Mom's Day Out this morning and it might as well start now!
Here is the plan:
5-6:30 am catch up on photo management and blogging
6:30-7 yoga stretch and meditation
7-7:30 get ready
7:30 head out
7:45-9 writing at a local coffee shop
9-? meet friend for coffee talk! (so excited about this!)
?-? mani/pedi, facial and brow wax at Legend Nail Spa if they can do any or all (I will be a walk-in so not sure what availability they have)
I would also like to accomplish the following:
*drop off dress at dry cleaners, shoes at cobbler, and swimsuit for repair (**bag of Goodwill stuff can wait til tomorrow)
*pick up birthday gift for O's friend Dane, swim party later on today
Of course somewhere in that schedule I will be feeding Laney and doing some other mommy duties but oh my goodness I am excited for some personal time. Yesterday I had a taste of it when both kids fell asleep at the same time for the first time since mid-June without me being behind the wheel. I didn't know what to do first, and of course I was just at the house. Imagine the taste of freedom I will have in a car about town! Ha! Don't get me wrong; I am LOVING my momma summer off and enjoying these little guys to the fullest. We are busy and having a blast every day. BUT there just hasn't been any time like this for a while.
It's all about the balance to keep one's sanity, right?
Last night we took the kids to the pool after dinner, about 7 pm. It was probably our fourth or fifth time doing it this summer. I really wanted to take Laney in but though the water was warm the air had a breezy chill to it so she just hung out with a soft blankie. We took turns in the hot tub (divine-my first time in for 14 months since I found out I was preggers again). Owen put his feet in the "hot pool" for a little bit and we also took turns swimming with him in the big pool. He loves his noodle and he started practicing blowing bubbles last night. He did great! I really want to get him in family swim lessons in August. Add that to the to-do list. We enjoyed the family walk over and back and after showering and the bedtime routine, it was 9 before they were asleep in bed.
For some reason I was inspired to make a pot roast with carrots, onions, and potatoes in the crock pot for dinner last night. The kids and I had to go to the market in the morning for such staples as eggs, milk, and bananas, so I went ahead and menu planned for the week using a few menu blogs and picked up what I needed. Though I can count on one hand the number of times I've gone for groceries for both kids by myself, it went pretty well! Laney fell asleep on the way there at 10:30 am and I put her carrier in the bottom of one cart. Owen was a dream in the cart (wearing his new sneakers from Brooks) and I carried a basket along and stuffed the things around the carseat and in the bottom of the cart as well. Amazing how much help you get when you have little ones. They weren't very busy so they helped me unload my cart and I said yes when they offered help out. They always offer (kids or not) but I usually say no. One of my favorite parts of food shopping now is asking for samples in the deli. It's fun, I get to share with O. and I don't have to pack a snack for him. (Though I do anyway, just in case.)
This week I've been working on my second July goal (after the week in the life posts) - cardio exercise. At least I think that was my second goal. If not, I'm doing it anyway because I REALLY NEED IT and I actually did it this week. First I focused on getting back to running. I had lots of running dreams when I was pregnant with Owen and was really excited to buy new running shoes a month after he was born. This time I didn't have the dreams so much, and it took me five months to want to get out on my own without a stroller in front of me. But Sunday night I did it. And it felt fantastic! So Monday I did it again. I signed up for Runkeeper, an iphone app that tracks everything: speed, pace, time, even maps it. So I pushed myself to stay under a 13 min/mile average pace. felt great. trouble was started to get shin splints and pain in feet the next day. So I took a break for a day and then Wednesday planned to go out again but O. had fallen asleep during dinner (no nap at home) and he woke up right before i was about to leave and was very momma clingy (couldn't be comforted) so I just packed him into the jogging stroller and we headed out together. I mostly walked, keeping the pace to under a 20 min. mile. The jogger was annoying me so I jogged a little but not much. I bought it at a consignment sale for $75 bucks (they run 200 and up) and it worked all right for a while but my list of complaints is growing. Wanna see it?
1.disgusting yellow film on all plastic see through areas
2.wheels lose air immediately
3.harness- one piece broken off so it comes undone a lot
4.hard to steer
5.grip covering on handles cracked (both handles) and rough feeling- don't want to touch it
6.I test-drove a cool ($600.00) double jogger and now I am spoiled and want it. :P**
**hey wait the link i found to show you the double jogger has it on sale for $425.00! buy buy baby was $600. But the website is in lilac with lilac foot muff. heehee.
Friday I decided to try swimming a few laps instead of running, since we were already at the pool with the kidlets. Heaven. Every time I get back in the pool I remember how heavenly swimming is and how it is my first choice for cardio. Simply wonderful. I want to do it every day. I need a plan to accomplish this. Especially now being sooo busy. But fitting in cardio every day would solve all my issues. I just know it. I started swimming as exercise back in 1996 after graduating college when I saw my 80-something year old mentor/neighbor/friend Madelene doing it. She was an inspiration. Riding her bike all over our neighborhood for errands, taking Spanish lessons twice a week from me to improve her conversational skills, etc. I started swimming in the apartment pool everyday after I came home form my teaching job at a bilingual Kindergarten. ***
***Please pause this long and meandering blog post (think I have a lot to share?) blog post for a 5:35 A.M. Laney feeding.
***Ok I'm back, with a bowl of cornflakes and almond milk. (5:57 am)
Anyway, on the swimming front, I don't remember swimming much during the three years at Bermuda Villas or the two in Fort Myers/Naples but I went back to swimming every day after school when I moved to Davie in 2002. Loved it. My first two years in California I looked for pools and tried one or two but heated outdoor pools just were far and few between and I didn't want to join a gym. Our townhouse pool works May-October but not during winter. So for the summer I'll try to go 1-2 evenings after kids are asleep and we are looking into a local gym with good child care for fall/winter.
Cardio Plan: run 1-2 X week, walk 1-2 X week, swim 1-2 X week, yoga stretch daily!
OK- rev your engines, blog catch up about to begin- 6 am. I have 30 minutes to do one or two posts before yoga time! So glad kids sleep til 7:15 or later during summer. :)
