Moments of 2008

I started out 2008 buried in classwork for my 30 graduate units. Luckily I had a dedicated assistant!

J, B, and S. came to visit for a week in January. Here they are in Union Station on the way to Universal Studios.

During their visit, my aunt and uncle D. and S. came to town, along with my cousins! We enjoyed having family over to our place.

For Valentine's Day, we went to see the seals and their pups in Carpenteria and then to the Santa Barbara Zoo.

I made my students these cute cell phone valentines I saw in a magazine. They turned out great!


Two girls with Vday hair!

In February, Gretchen came for a long overdue girly weekend. Here we are cooking up a storm!

In March, we got a new dining room table off Craigslist and Luna really had fun getting acquainted with it.

Kristin came to visit in April! Here we are in Santa Barbara.

My parents visited in April, too. Here we are with her college roommate and her family in LA.

In May, we repainted the third bedroom, changing it from butter yellow to lavender.

Our parents housesat for us while we went to Italy (my pics were separate for Italy so none are here). We enjoyed visiting with them and my cousins D. and S. after their CA road trip.

On Sept. 27, D's parents' anniversary, we attended our friends' wedding and also found out we were expecting!

Vazquez Rocks

We went to Vazquez Rocks park today for a little diversion. It was so beautiful and bright (though windy!) We brought a picnic and D. went all the way up to the top. Baby and I stayed at a more sensible altitude! Lots of things have been filmed here, including:

Christmas Eve

It's been a lovely quiet day here at home. Luna is snoozing beside me with her head all curled up cute. I am watching General Hospital! I see it about twice a year, and I just can't get over how quick you can jump back into the characters and storyline. It seems like I've known many of the characters my whole life! The Quartermaines, Felicia, Bobbie, Luke...it's fun to go into their world bi-annually for just a bit. I worked on knitting a scarf today, finished writing thank yous to my students, sent a few online gifts, and had a surprise holiday visit from our realtor, who sweetly remembers us and stops by even a year and a half after moving in! Love it! D. had a half-day at work and decided to stop at Whole Foods on the way home since we are expecting a winter storm this afternoon/evening. We are having cinnamon rolls Christmas morning, and pot roast with carrots and potatoes for Christmas dinner. Little one is hanging out, shooting me adorable little bubble "kicks" every couple of hours. I've been having fun surfing the internet too. Here is just a sampling of the topics I've searched today:

A Day off

Derek stayed home from work this morning since we had a dr. appt. at 11:20. He spent the morning baking chewy chocolate cookies, a new recipe from Cooks Illustrated magazine. They turned out delicious! We each had one at 10:30, before leaving for the appt. Today we got to see a Certified Nurse Midwife for our 16 week appt. She was wonderful. She waited patiently as I made my way through my list of questions and we listened to the heartbeat. After the appt. I got a flu shot and some labwork before going over to Homegoods for some last minute Christmas shopping. I came home at 2:00 and had an absolutely delicious lunch! Yesterday I was craving egg salad with lettuce and tomato big time so I had stopped at Von's to pick up eggs, mayo, celery, lettuce, and tomatoes. I made a big batch of egg salad yesterday and had a big sloppy sandwich on an Asiago cheese bagel with bread and butter pickles and cucumber slices on the side yesterday. Today was a repeat performance, but I learned that the bagel sandwich worked better as an open face sandwich, plus that way you get double the lettuce and tomatoes! I had celery sticks on the side with a big glass of milk and one of D's cookies for dessert. Needless to say, I am stuffed and ready for a little snooze!

D. and I enjoyed going to dinner at Saketini in Brentwood Saturday night with A. and J. Fun was had by all!

digital dependency

we had rainstorms yesterday and nearby areas received lots of snow. As one result, our digital cable and internet was out all evening. I hadn't realized how dependent I had become on both...at the same time. So I napped, finished a book I had on the nightstand for several months, wrapped a few gifts, and realized I need to finish shopping AND HOW! D. baked cookies and got a little neck massage since there was nothing to distract me. Lesson learned: turn off the computer and TV after work. We plan to pick one hour for each and that's it. I hadn't realized how much time I spent surfing and facebooking. aacck!

weekend fun

D's holiday office dinner party was really fun; great to see all the people I don't get to see every day like he does and fun because they all knew our news but hadn't seen me yet! Today we went to lunch at Noah's bagels, picked up a half dozen for tomorrow at home, and stopped by World Market for a shopping preview. Then we drove through a new section of town we hadn't really realized was there, a neighborhood known as Happy Valley. Lovely place with old sprawling homes from the '60's as well as some newer construction and best of all - old big trees and land! big yards and space between homes. We really enjoyed the area.

A busy Monday

It feels wintry here today; cold and gray. Here is a taste of my day:

taught kinder from 8-3; we tasted gingerbread men cookies and brainstormed describing words about them. Here is a selection of what my kidlets came up with:

Each student started by taking one bite and putting the cookie down. Then I gave them a paper gingerbread man and they had to cut off the part they bit, either the head, the arm, or the leg. Then we made a pictograph of the parts bitten. 12 kids bit off the head, 3 an arm, and 3 a leg! We also learned about the letter C and made paper mitten wreaths today. At 3:30 I:

headed to the grocery store for supplies to make the Daisy cupcakes for our Investiture ceremony on Wednesday. Here is what I bought:

3 thick and creamy yoplait yogurts
french bread pizza (deluxe)
cake mix
frosting
cupcake liners
2 frozen lunches (butternut squash ravioli and vegetarian masala)
food coloring (to make yellow center of daisy cake)

Then I stopped at the floral department and a florist shop searching for fresh Daisies to buy on Wednesday since we want to give each girl a real daisy with her pin at the ceremony. Found daisy mums at Bloomie's for $2.50 a bunch (3-5 blooms on a bunch) yay!

Next I stopped at the Union Bank branch to set up an appointment to open the non-profit fee-free checking account for the Daisy troop. Four of us need to go at once, so it took a bit of coordination. I haven't been inside a bank in a while. (our credit union is in Florida!) They had a weapon check entrance where you walk in one at a time and the interior door doesn't open til the outside door has shut. weird/wild!

Finally I got home, turned on our cheery garage Christmas lights (that D. put up on Saturday!), and came in to greet the Lu. I made a snack of a grilled cheese, tomato soup, and milk which I haven't had in ages! Now it's time to watch a netflix movie before D. gets home. Hope you had a productive Monday too!

Back in action!

whew- it's been over three weeks since my last post but with good reason! I was merely waiting out the last bit of my first trimester before announcing right here at casitaluna that WE ARE EXPECTING!

Yes, it's true! I know the rumors have been flying (or not) but the fact is, I am 14 weeks along in my first pregnancy and our little one is expected the first week of June, 2009!

I will continue posting here but if you are interested in more pregnancy/baby related posts, please email me a request since I will be setting up a password protected baby blog in the next month or so.

Saturday Chili and Cornbread

We enjoyed homemade turkey chili with fresh cornbread for dinner this evening. Up in the hills to the southeast flames poked above the Newhall Pass Ridge; we could see flames from the upstairs window. Today all looks well to the south. The winds have died down. I am itching for change of some kind; more later today!

Warm and windy

The weather has been warm and windy since yesterday; as a result there are yet again wildfires burning. The Montecito fire destroyed 111 homes in Santa Barbara Thursday and Friday, the Sayre fire was reported at 10:29 p.m. yesterday in Sylmar and now covers 2600 acres and 10000 people have been evacuated. This second fire is pretty close to our valley; just south over the hill so we have a lot of smoke coming our way.

Thursday night we went to a great concert at The Canyon Club in Encino, about a 30 mile drive southwest. We heard Glenn Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket and then Jonatha Brooke, a singer-songwriter favorite of mine. She has just released a new album written by combining her music with bits of lyrics she found in the music library of Woody Guthrie. Pretty amazing. Unfortunately, Glenn lives in the area of Santa Barbara that had just started burning, so he was anxious to get home. I was surprised he even played the concert. He switched billing and played first, and kept saying things between tunes like "Well, my neighborhood's on fire. My wife can see flames from the driveway. I won't be hanging out tonight; I need to go home and evacuate." Poor guy. I hope his home was spared.

Dowtown adventure

Today I am taking the train to LA to meet a friend for a shopping adventure! She will be taking the train north from Orange County, and we'll meet in the middle at Union Station. For some crazy reason, I've been waking up early on my own (no cat or alarm clock) all week! Must be the time change. I woke up at 5:30 every weekday, and 6:30 today! I was showered, dressed and out the door to the bagel shop/gas station by 7:30. crazy! DH is sleeping in, as he loves to do on Saturday. There is a bagel sandwich waiting for him downstairs though.

I started going through clothes and packing for our Thanksgiving trip today. I am packing up clothes for my 15 and 11 1/2 year old cousins. That's pretty fun! I used to love hand-me-downs when I was a kid. Well, I still do! It's a beautiful day and I am looking forward to wearing myself out in Los Angeles and coming home with at least one new treasure! 24 hours-slice of life

A Day for the History Books

Back in 2004, after canvassing Florida neighborhoods wearing an oversized Kerry tee-shirt for hours on Election Day, I really thought I would be more "into" this election. I remember consoling myself the day after thinking that I would quit my job and rally for the first woman president all summer and fall of 2008. Somehow, I didn't get involved. Too self-oriented, perhaps? Too uncommitted? I have to admit I am excited. After all, in a 180 degree turn from '04, my candidate won this time. But boy is he walking into a lion pit. What a job he will have. I don't doubt his ability, and I sincerely hope the people of the U.S. continue to rally behind his message of change. Many McCain supporters seem to be embracing the change, and looking at it more as a step in history than as a loss. However you feel about the results, isn't it a little bit refreshing to think of the possibilities.

On a local election note, Prop 8 looks like it passed, banning gay marriage again in California. This has been the issue of the day locally, with opposing groups lining up on opposite street corners for weeks waving their signs. It looks like it was 51% for and 48%(ish) against. hmm.

Rainy Day

Yay- A rainy day! We do not get too many of those out here. It actually thunderstormed overnight-delicious! Luckily the rain held out on Halloween, so we could hold our first annual Halloween block party! Several neighbors (about seven families) brought out hot dogs, crock pots of tortilla soup and baked ziti, fresh cornbread, chips and of course the requisite Halloween treats and hung out from sundown til about 10 pm while the neighborhood kids entertained themselves in a rented Monster Truck bounce house at the end of the cul de sac. Fun times!

I am indulging in creating several Halloween costumes via Yahoo avatars. Over the next several days until Oct. 30, I will put up different ones. Then I will open a voting poll on Oct. 31 to see which one wins! First up, Victorian Gothic Peg with lavender hair (pixie short of course!)

Life of a teacher

14 boxes arrived in my classroom today. For the next few months (Nov. to early March) I will be piloting not one but two different math series as part of the committee to adopt our math curriculum for next year. The boxes need to be saved, and everything returned in them. Exciting and !!! at the same time.

In other school news, I have a student teacher (she is finishing up her 6th out of 8 weeks in our classroom) and it is a wonderful experience. She is so enthusiastic and with it! I will miss her when she finishes Nov. 7.

Lastly, I have been assigned emergency driver of the pregnant K team member if anything should happen that requires her to leave school and go to the hospital between now and her maternity leave. Wow!

A busy school life, and we haven't talked about a typical day.

Today is not typical. I will be in meetings all day. I like meetings, so it's all good. But I miss those little kidlets and their energy.

Today, after 30 years in Girl Scouting, I am taking Basic Leader Training and Daisy Leader Training at my local service unit.
Yes! I am going to be a Daisy Girl Scout leader for 11 girls from my school (3 from my own class!) Yay!

a long week

feeling so thankful for Friday! thankful in general, but this was an extra long week:

Luckily, the weather has turned (finally!) cooler and Fallish (did you ever think you'd hear that come out of my mouth?)

Ready for a fun, busy weekend as we've had several relaxing ones of late.

Heading out to a local paint the pottery joint tonight and tomorrow morning we will go out to breakfast and then to a local pumpkin farm.

Not Me Monday

I found this fun project on My Charming Kids, so funny!

That was not me eating the swiss cheese and baby goldfish cracker sandwich on an old hamburger bun on Wednesday, nope, no way. I would never avoid grocery shopping for 3 weeks so that all I could find for lunch was a crackers and cheese sandwich!

I did not spend several moments looking around the parking lot to make sure there were no wheelstops (yes, that is what they are called, I had to look it up....also called parking blocks) at any of the spots because I couldn't remember if I saw one in front of my car and I wanted to pull straight through my spot to leave. I sure didn't see any. So, it couldn't have been me that confidently pulled forward and hit one just a second later. Nope.

Friday evening a box arrived with an early birthday present from my dear friend K, containing a two-tier bento box with rabbits and a full moon. The decoration is based on this.

Inside the top tier are five small dividing containers.

I made two tortilla butterflies for the bottom layer.

Here is a tortilla and cheese duck floating on a chipped ham lake with celery grass and a plum moon! The duck's eye is a dried cranberry.

Yes, I went back

I went again for acu. treatments on saturday morning and again today. I think 3 times for the first week should jumpstart my system and get that chi flowing! I plan to go once a week for the remainder of the month and then twice a month for a couple months. By then, I should (hopefully) only need to go for "tuneups" (thanks emily qi for your comment regarding frequency in my last post!) My needs were pretty severe at first and perhaps that's why she wanted me to go so often. Or maybe she just wants the money. But I am feeling good. At the end of the second treatment (during which she added two needles for a total of 12), she gave me a magnetic patch to put in my ear and told me to press it a certain way. This was actually great. I got another one today on the opposite ear. I know that some acupuncturists really delve deep with the personal history and stuff and mine didn't so much but I'm thinking it may be a trade-off for her budget prices. Other area acu's charge 150 and then 95 per session. Maybe they offer more like dietary guidance etc. but since I'm still learning this is a good starting point.

Acupuncture

I'm not sure if they stuck the needles in my body or my wallet!
I've always wanted to try acupuncture, and today was the lucky day!
After a short (20 min.) consultation I found myself relaxing on a table with ten small needles stuck in my calves, feet, abdomen, head, hands and ear! (just the right ear-and it hurt!) burned actually. she said that was due to the lack of tissue there. $105 later I heard the words,
"Come back tomorrow."
Hold on, what?
"Tomorrow? Um, how many times..." I started
"Come tomorrow, skip Sunday, come Monday, then Wednesday, then..."
Hold up, what?
"I don't think I can afford that," I said.
"Well, come two times a week then. But come tomorrow. What time can you come?"

Ok. So I have a 10:30 appt. But I'm thinking of learning acupressure and staying home. What do you think?

(p.s. the first appt. had a $40 charge for initial consultation, follow-ups will be $65, but stilllll)

A Fun Day Out

We headed back to our old stomping grounds in LA yesterday. We had tickets to a friend's theatre production at a small theater on Santa Monica Blvd. at 7, so we left the house around noon and first drove to Los Feliz, our old neighborhood. It looked pretty much the same, even the apartment building. We went to The Alcove for coffee and dessert, sharing a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookie and a slice of tarte tatin. After our treat, we drove over to Glendale to check out the new Americana on Brand, an outdoor mall that was under construction when we lived there. It's pretty upscale, the only shops we could actually shop at would be Sur la Table and Barnes and Noble. We had fun walking around and checking it out, and then sat upstairs by the big picture windows in B/N reading some selections. Around 4:30, we drove back over to Silver Lake in order to eat at Malo, D's favorite spot to eat in LA> They serve beef and pickle tacos which are good. The show was funny, and we were driving back home by 8:30. A fun Sunday- and no work tomorrow! yay!

Somewhere Right Now a family packs their bags, hustling away from home again, for the second time in the last three years.

Another family celebrates the announcement of a certain former PTA mom, beauty queen and caribou hunter as the GOP VP nominee.

Yet another family rues the day and curses the GOP for it's choice, calling it patronizing to assume that ANY woman could soothe their pain at Hillary's failure to make that 18 million and first crack in the glass ceiling.

Quiet night

We ended up skipping the concert last night; we were both tired and run-down from the week. I drove down to D's office to meet him but we decided to come back home (which of course took an hour with traffic) but we are glad we did. Had some toast and went to bed early.

*Megi's son, Jayden Luis was born Tuesday night (Aug. 26) at 10:03 p.m. 7 lbs, 9 oz. 20 inches. Mama, baby and daddy doing great- they head home from the hospital tomorrow! Congrats!!!

*Back to School night was a success tonight! I gave two 45 minute sessions to groups of 10 and 5 sets of parents about what to expect in our class this year! Signed up two volunteers on the spot and was promised at least 3 more! yay!

*We head to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow evening for a concert by the LA Philharmonic performing John Williams music with John Williams conducting.

September is just around the corner!

Fall is in the air and I LOVE FALL! It is definitely my favorite season! I love:

*thinking about Halloween and costumes
*big crunchy apples (they only taste good in the Fall)
*pumpkin farms
*oatmeal for breakfast
*the smell of freshly sharpened pencils

In putting together the little photographic timeline down the right side of the blog (at 3:30 a.m. no less), I am realizing that D and I do not take a heck of a lot of photos together. In fact, you may think the timeline is a representation of our photos together but in all reality, these are nearly ALL of our photos together. Granted, there are a few from when we first started dating (Fall 2003) and didn't have a digital camera yet, but really the selection is limited! And how sad, because we have been to some mighty fun places and have no record that we were actually there TOGETHER! So- NEW SCHOOL YEAR'S RESOLUTION-

5000th visitor

I was trying to figure out a way to reward my 5000th visitor (which actually isn't the 5000th visitor because for a while I wasn't using the counter) and then I turned out to be the "5000th" visitor! ha! I saw someone do this on their blog and I thought it was cute so here goes:

My college bud and amazing galpal J. got married 11.2.02 in NY; we got to spend bunches of time the day before together doing wedding errands. I had so much fun being a part of her special day-




Then on May 17, 2003 I was the only female attendant for my dear friend G. It was such a love-filled room!


The most recent wedding was that of my kindred spirit and friend since high school K. in Sept. 2005. It was such a romantic ceremony in a gorgeous setting! I will post another pic soon of the whole wedding party.
