New Bed-(Original Post started May 12!)
Owen got his big boy bed the last week of April. I'll let the pictures tell how he liked it! We left the crib empty for a while to make it "neutral territory" and then one day I asked O. to look at how Laney was filling up the bassinet. "What can we do? Where can she sleep?" The first time I broached the topic the response was:
"Maybe Laney sleep momma bed little bit." But about a week later the reply was "Maybe Laney sleep Owen's room." I was able to record him saying that on my phone, just in case he debates his role in the plan in the future! So far, so good. After Costa Rica we were able to train him to fall asleep by himself in his own bed and if Laney happens to cry or be noisy he doesn't rouse. phew!

Fourth of July Teaser

This was not the moon last night but about a month ago. Derek took this amazing pic with his new camera that we got for the Costa Rica trip. Once I catch up on post starting in about March/April, you might even get to see more pictures taken with it on the trip! Imagine that!
It is early Saturday morning and I am up wide awake. yay! Of course it helps that
A) I went to bed at 9 at the same time as the kids and
B) I had a caffeine headache and took one excedrin at 2 am after feeding laney.
I am looking forward to a Mom's Day Out this morning and it might as well start now!
Here is the plan:
5-6:30 am catch up on photo management and blogging
6:30-7 yoga stretch and meditation
7-7:30 get ready
7:30 head out
7:45-9 writing at a local coffee shop
9-? meet friend for coffee talk! (so excited about this!)
?-? mani/pedi, facial and brow wax at Legend Nail Spa if they can do any or all (I will be a walk-in so not sure what availability they have)
I would also like to accomplish the following:
*drop off dress at dry cleaners, shoes at cobbler, and swimsuit for repair (**bag of Goodwill stuff can wait til tomorrow)
*pick up birthday gift for O's friend Dane, swim party later on today
Of course somewhere in that schedule I will be feeding Laney and doing some other mommy duties but oh my goodness I am excited for some personal time. Yesterday I had a taste of it when both kids fell asleep at the same time for the first time since mid-June without me being behind the wheel. I didn't know what to do first, and of course I was just at the house. Imagine the taste of freedom I will have in a car about town! Ha! Don't get me wrong; I am LOVING my momma summer off and enjoying these little guys to the fullest. We are busy and having a blast every day. BUT there just hasn't been any time like this for a while.
It's all about the balance to keep one's sanity, right?
Last night we took the kids to the pool after dinner, about 7 pm. It was probably our fourth or fifth time doing it this summer. I really wanted to take Laney in but though the water was warm the air had a breezy chill to it so she just hung out with a soft blankie. We took turns in the hot tub (divine-my first time in for 14 months since I found out I was preggers again). Owen put his feet in the "hot pool" for a little bit and we also took turns swimming with him in the big pool. He loves his noodle and he started practicing blowing bubbles last night. He did great! I really want to get him in family swim lessons in August. Add that to the to-do list. We enjoyed the family walk over and back and after showering and the bedtime routine, it was 9 before they were asleep in bed.
For some reason I was inspired to make a pot roast with carrots, onions, and potatoes in the crock pot for dinner last night. The kids and I had to go to the market in the morning for such staples as eggs, milk, and bananas, so I went ahead and menu planned for the week using a few menu blogs and picked up what I needed. Though I can count on one hand the number of times I've gone for groceries for both kids by myself, it went pretty well! Laney fell asleep on the way there at 10:30 am and I put her carrier in the bottom of one cart. Owen was a dream in the cart (wearing his new sneakers from Brooks) and I carried a basket along and stuffed the things around the carseat and in the bottom of the cart as well. Amazing how much help you get when you have little ones. They weren't very busy so they helped me unload my cart and I said yes when they offered help out. They always offer (kids or not) but I usually say no. One of my favorite parts of food shopping now is asking for samples in the deli. It's fun, I get to share with O. and I don't have to pack a snack for him. (Though I do anyway, just in case.)
This week I've been working on my second July goal (after the week in the life posts) - cardio exercise. At least I think that was my second goal. If not, I'm doing it anyway because I REALLY NEED IT and I actually did it this week. First I focused on getting back to running. I had lots of running dreams when I was pregnant with Owen and was really excited to buy new running shoes a month after he was born. This time I didn't have the dreams so much, and it took me five months to want to get out on my own without a stroller in front of me. But Sunday night I did it. And it felt fantastic! So Monday I did it again. I signed up for Runkeeper, an iphone app that tracks everything: speed, pace, time, even maps it. So I pushed myself to stay under a 13 min/mile average pace. felt great. trouble was started to get shin splints and pain in feet the next day. So I took a break for a day and then Wednesday planned to go out again but O. had fallen asleep during dinner (no nap at home) and he woke up right before i was about to leave and was very momma clingy (couldn't be comforted) so I just packed him into the jogging stroller and we headed out together. I mostly walked, keeping the pace to under a 20 min. mile. The jogger was annoying me so I jogged a little but not much. I bought it at a consignment sale for $75 bucks (they run 200 and up) and it worked all right for a while but my list of complaints is growing. Wanna see it?
1.disgusting yellow film on all plastic see through areas
2.wheels lose air immediately
3.harness- one piece broken off so it comes undone a lot
4.hard to steer
5.grip covering on handles cracked (both handles) and rough feeling- don't want to touch it
6.I test-drove a cool ($600.00) double jogger and now I am spoiled and want it. :P**
**hey wait the link i found to show you the double jogger has it on sale for $425.00! buy buy baby was $600. But the website is in lilac with lilac foot muff. heehee.
Friday I decided to try swimming a few laps instead of running, since we were already at the pool with the kidlets. Heaven. Every time I get back in the pool I remember how heavenly swimming is and how it is my first choice for cardio. Simply wonderful. I want to do it every day. I need a plan to accomplish this. Especially now being sooo busy. But fitting in cardio every day would solve all my issues. I just know it. I started swimming as exercise back in 1996 after graduating college when I saw my 80-something year old mentor/neighbor/friend Madelene doing it. She was an inspiration. Riding her bike all over our neighborhood for errands, taking Spanish lessons twice a week from me to improve her conversational skills, etc. I started swimming in the apartment pool everyday after I came home form my teaching job at a bilingual Kindergarten. ***
***Please pause this long and meandering blog post (think I have a lot to share?) blog post for a 5:35 A.M. Laney feeding.
***Ok I'm back, with a bowl of cornflakes and almond milk. (5:57 am)
Anyway, on the swimming front, I don't remember swimming much during the three years at Bermuda Villas or the two in Fort Myers/Naples but I went back to swimming every day after school when I moved to Davie in 2002. Loved it. My first two years in California I looked for pools and tried one or two but heated outdoor pools just were far and few between and I didn't want to join a gym. Our townhouse pool works May-October but not during winter. So for the summer I'll try to go 1-2 evenings after kids are asleep and we are looking into a local gym with good child care for fall/winter.
Cardio Plan: run 1-2 X week, walk 1-2 X week, swim 1-2 X week, yoga stretch daily!
OK- rev your engines, blog catch up about to begin- 6 am. I have 30 minutes to do one or two posts before yoga time! So glad kids sleep til 7:15 or later during summer. :)

Week in the life- Day 7, Thurs. July 7, 2011
We haven't officially started potty training but the potty has been out and we've been talking about it lots. Lately (for the past week or so) he goes and sits every other day or so. Today he repeated the little routine, sit, wipe, flush, etc. about 8 times and ended up doing both number one and number two! so he has 7 stickers so far on his little chart. When he gets to 10 he gets a surprise!
Go O!
This morning daddy stayed home and worked upstairs, our neighbor Karina and her daughter Sabrina came about 9:30 so I could attend a funeral. When I got home around 12, I fed Owen lunch (chicken, rice, edamame) and we hung out all afternoon. Around 4:30 he wanted daddy and we went to the garage to hang out and wait for him. yep.
Since he didn't nap at all, he went to bed pretty early. Laney girl ended up asleep by about 7 herself. She has been enjoying playing with him (laughing at his dances and giggling) she is rolling front to back more often and has done a couple times back to front.
She has developed a funny wrinkly nose face when she giggles; it is really cute. Well, this is the end of week in the life until October. I plan to try and do it four times a year. It may be day in the life instead though, this was really hard! I couldn't even include details like outfits, meals, bathing, or specific books or games. Just no time with a two year old and an infant. Oh well!
TGIF!

Week in the LIfe-Day 6, Wed. July 6, 2011
Today we headed out by 8:30 on our way to Pasadena to meet Alice and Oqwe. First stop, the playground outside Kidspace museum near the Rose Bowl. We parked around 9:15, got organized, and saw them right away. We played till about 10:15, then headed over to the museum. We spent time in the early childhood indoor playroom, the outdoor splash fountains, the construction zone (with giant legos and wheelbarrows), the outdoor early childhood area with water play and tricycle path, and of course stopped for lunch! We left around 2:15 and the kids napped on the way home. We went to Trader Joe's for a few staples before going home and arrived home about 5:30. That means that Tues. we were out for 7 hours and WEd. 9 hours! I vowed to stay home as much as possible the rest of the week. When daddy got home we went swimming. yay! both kids love it!
The kids have been going to bed really late but I was super excited because tonight O. stayed in his bed and went to sleep alone in his room first time!
I will try to add pix soon

Week in the life- Day 5 Tues. July 5, 2011
For naps on the fourth, I had driven the kids out through Canyon Country and around the Agua Dulce/Acton horse country. Ever since the Costa Rica trip, the kids haven't been able to nap at home (except for right now- Friday July 8, at 4:15! Owen fell asleep on the couch at 3:55 after I read Digger Man 4 times in a row, and Laney just now conked out in her rocker. Hallelujah- yesterday we stayed home all afternoon and Owen didn't nap at all so he actually went to sleep at 7 pm instead of 9 or 10. Not sure which is better.) Anyway, while out in Acton I found the LA county library branch which is probably the prettiest building in town and saw that it had just opened last September and had a story hour Tuesdays at 11. So Tuesday morning we got in the car around 10 and dropped off some paperwork at St. Stephen's before heading out there.
Story time was nice, about 7 kids, and there was a craft. Owen's first storytime craft, I think. It was a rattle decorated with foam stickers and filled with beans. He enjoyed making it. After storytime, we hung it in the (small but cute) children's area and read some books, did a puzzle, and then I fed Laney in the car while O. had a snack. After the feeding, we returned to the library to check out some books, then went over and picked up sandwiches at the western style McDonald's for a picnic in the park. Laney napped while we ate on the grass. It was nice and breezy. Then O. got to play for fifteen or twenty minutes before we heard thunder and saw a lightning strike, so we left. Then I took a long drive back while O. napped. L. napped a little more too.

Week in the life day 4. July 4,2011

This morning we had blueberry waffles before getting ready to walk over to our hometown Parade. O mostly ate just the berries! Both kids enjoyed watching the parade. O loved waving his flag at everyone and especially watching the trucks and horses. After the parade we walked back home which took 45 minutes and was really hot! We played at home and daddy cooked an amazing barbecue chicken lunch with grilled veggies, baked beans, and grilled potatoes too.
Naps
Swim- Laney's first time actually getting all the way in the water- She loved it! She's a kicker and lays back to float and grab the wall pretty easily. We will probably be taking parent and me swimming in August with both kids.
Fireworks - we walked to the bridge with our neighbors. O stayed up and enjoyed. L slept!

Week in the life-day 2 July 2,2011
Saturday morning Laney woke up around 7:15 while Owen and daddy slept til about 8 and 8:30 respectively. Momma and Laney did some baby yoga and baby massage and played in the kids room reading Little Yoga with O when he woke up. Momma got laney and herself dressed and ready and left for a haircut about 9:20. Daddy, laney and o had breakfast and went to Sport clips for o's haircut then to Ross to look for sneakers for o. They didn't find any, then went to Kaiser so o could get his Tb screening read. Momma stopped at Goodwill and found 3 summer tops, a brand new old navy olive green mini and olive green knee length shorts for summer wear. Then I did a couple errands and picked up chick fil a to bring home for everyone for lunch.
After lunch we tried putting O down for a nap but after an hour decided he'd need a little car ride to help get the job done. Daddy took him out and I chilled at home with Laney girl.
If I'm lucky I'll come back and fill in the blanks of this day. Probably I'm lucky to have this much!

A Week in the Life Day 1: Friday, July 1
The day began at 7:30 with all five of us (including Luna the cat) vying for space in our queen size bed. Laney had come in to feed a bit earlier and stayed; I think O. had been in since 1 or 2 am, which is typical ever since Laney's arrival in late January. We woke up to say good-bye to daddy when he left for work around 7:50, and went downstairs to make breakfast after changing Laney's diaper and dressing her in a hot pink onesie and giraffe print dress, her new shoes, and a hot pink bow. (This after I asked Owen to bring Laney some clothes. He obliged with a blue smocked dress that had been mine as a baby and then a combo of a bathing suit and black patent shoes.:) I made scrambled eggs and wheat toast with milk for Owen and had an egg burrito, decaf, and two slices of french bread with melted chocolate chips myself. (I rarely start a day without some form of chocolate. Helps ease the pain of less quality sleep. That's my theory and I'm sticking with it.) Around 8:30 we headed back upstairs for me and Owen to get dressed. I try to have him pick out his own clothes but he's not really interested so we went with plaid shorts and a basic white tee with sandals. I quickly grabbed my standard summer uniform of yoga pants and a tank top, paired with flip flops. I packed the kids in their carseats, grabbed water and a snack for O (along with a bag of toys and books), topped off my travel mug with decaf, and headed toward my school. Though it was technically not a workday, I had a tough job ahead. Just yesterday, I had been shocked with the news that one of my student's from this past year lost his father in an accidental drowning last Sunday evening, while swimming with the kids. Today i would be helping the principal translate as he called the family to check about services and how they were doing. I spoke with a brother-in-law, and found out there would be a kermesse for fundraising on Sunday at a local park, and that funeral arrangements had not been made as of yet. The kids were fine waiting on me, and after we headed to the school playground for a few minutes, before the sunny hot equipment made us leave and go to a local shady park instead.
We arrived at the park around 10 AM, but Owen wasn't really happy with his sandals so we swang and ate a snack, I fed Laney and then left to head home. We had an early lunch around 11:15, and changed diapers, caught the recycling truck pick-up, and freshened up to head to My Gym free play around 12:15. I decided to grab a cold Starbucks on the way, so we drove over to the drive thru Starbucks ( a little out of the way but totally worth not having to get kids in/out again). Then we headed to My Gym, but both kids were asleep by the time we got there at 12:45. This has been happening ever since the Costa Rica trip, they fall asleep within five minutes of getting in the car. I let O. sleep til 1 while feeding L., (a little over a half-hour), then loaded Laney in the stroller and carried O inside. He woke up and had fun playing til 1:45, then we headed to a lemonade stand put on by my friend's daughter and her two friends. It was great fun watching O. pay his one dollar for a lemonade and three cookies (two for mom and dad!)
Then we had a bit of difficulty as he was hot and overtired and simply wouldn't be put in the carseat. It literally took an hour to leave the lemonade stand and head home. We finally had to call daddy at work to help. Tough. Once we got home it was about 3:45 so Owen had his afternoon snack and we hung out playing quietly in the A/C til daddy got home around 5. Momma headed out with Laney to visit the student's family who had lost their father, while daddy stayed home with O. When I got home around 6:15, O. was asleep on daddy's lap, and Laney was asleep in the car, so we loaded up both sleeping kids and went to get dinner at CPK. O. loved his honey chicken pizza, and momma and daddy enjoyed half salads and focaccia. We got home around 7:55 for momma to feed Laney and daddy to start the bedtime routine. L. fell asleep by 9 but Owen was in and out of his bed until 9:30.
Finally there was time to straighten up, check the bank accounts, blog a little, and crash! TGIF!

Finally there was time to straighten up, check the bank accounts, blog a little, and crash! TGIF!
July
The first day of July already! Here are my July goals:
*week in the life blog: week one
*daily meditation and yoga: week two
*implement twice a week cardio and twice a week strength training: week three
*submit 5 writing projects: week four
We will be celebrating five years of marriage at the end of the month (July 30!) My 20 year high school reunion happens to be the same day, but we are not attending. Maybe for 25. ha!
Other goals for summer:
*make and freeze pureed fruits and veggies for Laney for when I go back to school. She hasn't started solids yet but will start at the end of this month.
*practice some easy recipes and formulate a rotating list of easy weeknight suppers for fall
*continue the beginning stages of potty training with Owen. He peed on the potty two days straight and pooped "near' it yesterday. He would've made it in but he was standing up in front of it. whoops!
*O's first dentist appt. (July 11)
*Laney's 6 month appt. (July 26)
*Parent-child swimming lessons at Valencia Meadows Park Pool week of Aug. 8 for both kids and parents (have to register)
*organize master closet and office/studio for fall
*read up on discipline and how to get O. to stay in his bed at bedtime. (ideas/strategies welcome)
So excited to have welcomed baby Madden Arnoux Boggus this month on June 15 to my friend Cynthia in Florida. Expecting baby Jones and baby Leftridge later this month, and also little Tomas Daniel my Bolivian cousin Daniela's son.
On to the first project of July: a full week of "day in the life" posts. I plan to repeat the first week of October, January, and May in order to document the various seasons of our life. Of course, this week is atypical since it is a holiday weekend and I am off work. Let the fun begin!
